I arrived on Sunday, Sept. 4th, amid the Labor Day Weekend crowds. Caught an earlier ferry than the one I'd reserved and thought I'd have time to get acquainted with the house -- one of the owners gives newcomers a tour of the place -- but Evan, Melanie and her folks caught an earlier than scheduled ferry too. So Denise and Rich Lehman, Mel, Evan and I all got the "welcome tour" together.
Shortly after getting settled Evan and I headed to Cronig's Market to stock up on groceries. I'd brought along Manhattan Clam Chowder I'd prepared the day before so we'd have a hearty if not fancy dinner our first night on the island; but we needed not only basics but food for the coming week(s) as well. That night we enjoyed wine and then dinner on the patio overlooking the harbor and began feeling truly relaxed.
Alas, Monday's weather was iffy but not a deterrent to some island sightseeing. Key to such a tour is my favorite fishing village -- Menemsha -- where we all enjoyed lobster rolls and such on the porch of an eatery I return to time and again. (I digress: Noreen, Ryan, Evan and I would spend a week on Martha's Vineyard for many of the summers in the '80s and '90s. In later years we'd rent in the same condo complex and often were joined by other families from the neighborhood, each of us with our own condo but close enough to hang out together when we wanted to.)
ENOUGH WITH THE WORDS --
LET'S SEE SOME PHOTOS...
